What is the propaganda question asking? How one nation's propaganda affected the US specifically? Can I use US propaganda for this?

And on the c/c question, I'm going to assume it's asking to c/c WWI and WWII. Am I correct?

Since we are are bucketing in class and have questions...

Paige would like to know if we have all or enough content for the last q.

I am curious about the 2 Hitler questions. We have examples of the mass rallies, what his ideology was, how it built on fears etc. But most of the public response we examined was negative. Could we have some examples?

On the propaganda question would the buckets be: Financing the War, Supporting the war(various stages), and Homefront (Rosie, recruitment, gardens etc.)?

Bailey would appreciate online resources about the Luftwaffe.

(Insert British accent here, the class insists) Connell, Madison, Paige, Sierra, Justin, Josh, Tyler, Bailey, Colin, Aubrey, and Brandon say, "Hi."

Mr. O said...

Paige,

I think you do. I would probably doing the U.S. First, I would look at internment, I would look at increased role of women and results, and finally I would look at the African Americans role and the rise of the Civil Rights movement.

On Hitler,

I am not sure the public response was negative. We watched the video of women swooning. Remember the video where there was great deal of discussion about him seducing the German people. Propaganda like Triumph of the Will makes him a popular figure. However, I would suggest that conditions may be even more critical than personality.

Point two of propaganda confuses me a little bit. I might look at propaganda that villainizes the enemy, propaganda that encourages participation, propaganda the funds or raises an army. The other possibility is to go with types of propaganda. Soft propaganda which could be cartoons that isn't specific to a cause, movies and cartoons to raise money/soldiers, and then conventional propaganda such as posters.

Bailey-The wikipedia article is very comprehensive and I didn't see any glaring mistakes.

Hi to all and to all a good Friday.

for question 8 (the role of two countries on the outbreak of the war), I'm trying to find two contries that link to all the others, like we did with a similar WWI question. I keep coming back to Germany as my first choice, but I'm torn between the US, Britain, France, and Russia for the second. All of them have appeal, but I'm having trouble determining the critical country.

Justin said...

as a point of carification, is it essential for causes questions to discuss both theatres of war, or do the questions allow us to use just the european or pacific theatre?

Ry Lynx said...

Would the depression in Germany be a short term? and the treaty of Versallies? I would think they would be short term because how close WW1 and 2 are in history but if they are short term would the causes of world war one be long term? or Should i be looking at hitlers influence, appeasment and the republic, and stock market crash for short term and the previously mentioned causes for long term....??

Annie Marshall said...

Mr. O,

I need help with bucketing the questions..
For question 4 (Evaluate the role of air power during WWII) could I split it into Pacific war front and European? Then focus on specific battles like Okinawa and Battle of Britain when air power was critical?

For question 6 (In what ways and to what extent did Hitler use ideology to control and support his regime?) could I bucket it into: Propaganda/Control of media, use of military, and education of population?

Then question 7 (With reference to one right wing leader, to what extent did personal qualities lead to the rise of power?) Could I say that to some extent it was his personal qualities, but also due to other factors like: significant bitterness, ineffective german consitution, propaganda of Nazi party, attack on other parties such as communists, the opportune time with US stock market crash, being made chancellor and Hindenburg's declining health. I just don't know how to bucket those points into two buckets!

Thanks!

Mr. O said...

Hi Justin,

I would probably use the sheet that was handed out on Friday. It does a pretty good job of laying out some possible causes. If it was me, I would probably use Japan and Germany.

Ryleigh,

I think those are part of a long-term trend of a rising Germany in the center of Europe. Short term would probably focus on the diplomacy discussed by Kissinger.

Annie,

For question 4, I think there a couple of possibilities. You could follow a chronological theme, or you could break it into three areas like initial offensive, German front, Japanese front. The final possibility would be to look at themes like surprise/blitzkrieg, carrier based mobility, and use in total war/a bomb.

For question 6, it would be fine, but you have to address ideology or the lack thereof throughout the essay.

For question 7, think about how those things are combined. How about personal qualities, anger over Versailles/economic crisis, and political opportunity/manipulation.

I hope this helps.

Laura Johnson said...

Mr. O,
Looking at question no. 6, we were wondering if the following bucket structure had the most flexibility for all the information that can be used. We were thinking of doing a bucket explaining Hitler's ideology, education and then cult of personality. This could develop the propaganda for the Jewish questions as well as the love for the Furher. Any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Laura and Ben

Emma Lawrence-Yee said...

What exactly was the role of air power in Bliterkreig other than helping to speed along the process?

Laura Johnson said...

Emma,
Just thought I would answer this for you because I just worked on it. If I am wrong, please correct me Mr. O. The air power was very important in the Blitzkreig because Germany used it to take down many of the defenses against tanks that way they could burst through with their infantry and tank divisions for a speedy invasion. Basically, it was used as weakening defenses for the most efficient use of infantry. Does that Help?
Laura

Mr. O said...

Emma,

Laura is essentially correct. The luftwaffe was also used to create chaos behind enemy lines.

Laura and Ben,

I think that could work. In education, don't forget the Hitler Youth and German Maidens. Also, I would make sure in propaganda that you discuss the mass meetings.

Emma Lawrence-Yee said...

Yeah, Laura, thank you! And also, how does Civil Rights tie into the results of the war?

Emma Lawrence-Yee said...

For the Total War question, could you do:
1. Military practices - draft, civilian bombing
2. Homefront - women, loans, rationing, propaganda
3...? Mass civillian deaths - Holocaust, Japanese suicide

If I'm to go with the first two, I'm kinda flailing for a 3rd

smart.babe. said...

Mr. O,
So, we were having a debate, and were wondering if you could clear up how many Japanese kamikazes there were in the Battle of Okinawa... Me and Sierra are convinced its 900, and Ashley and Kayla are saying 2000.

Emma Lawrence-Yee said...

The question concerning the A-bomb gives us the option of taking the middle road with "to what extent." I'm assuming we shouldn't do this, but would it lessen the strength of the argument by having one bucket be a counterpoint? Cause I feel like that would be a good thing.

Laura Johnson said...

Mr. O,
Another question for you (what did you expect?) So we are bucketing the lovely question number nine, about the dropping of the atomic bomb, and were wondering if the following bucket structure was applicable and decent:
1. Japanese Conduct of War: honor code, war crimes, etc.
2. Strategic Value of the bomb: both military and political value
3. Human Costs: a cost benefit analysis of deaths on either side specifically with Japanese victims and those killed by the Japanese.

Yours Truly,
Ben and Laura

Josh said...

Emma. If you are saying middle ground as in dropping one bomb or dropping demo bombs on the ocean (this could cause really bad tsunamis btw)I know there is a strong argument. From what I have heard and I would like Mr. O. to verify(hint, hint) there is some evidence Japan was going to surrender when Russia entered the war. (Not talking about to whom here.)You do have the issue of registering what happened at Hiroshima. And for the demo tests they likely would have needed to detonated several close together to prove that they had more than one bomb.

Paige and Sierra have my memories vote on the kamikazes. 3000 is too many for one battle, the battle of Britain was around 1900 planes downed or the like.

Ben would you check your email if you see this?

Mr. O. Would approaching the first question chronologically with a determinist argument be a good idea? Which historian should we use?

Justin said...

On question 1, should we discuss the causes of WWII in both theatres?

Justin said...

When dealing with causes, when exactly do "long term" causes stop and "short term" causes begin? and what about "immediate" causes?

For example, is the Rape of Nanjing a long or short term cause?

Mr. O said...

Emma,

I think a focus on the tranformation of industry and consumption would be a better third point for the total war question.

Paige,

Ashley is closer. 900 occurred on a single day.

Emma,

I wouldn't be afraid of using a counter-point, but I might use it as an intro and then outweigh it.

Laura,

That looks fine.

I'm going to post this and catch the rest in a few minutes

Mr. O said...

Josh,

You have a whole paper covering the historiography of the causes. I would suggest starting there. As for chronological, I think it would work.

Justin,

Yes, both theaters.
I'm not sure Rape of Nanking is cause as much as a result or a practice. As for short term and long term, it is subjective. However, if it has ripple effect into the modern, it is probably long term. If you are looking at causes, I would go back at least five years for long term.

Justin said...

For question 6, does the fact that Hitler was part of the Nazi party fit into personal qualities? If it doesn't, could I use the arguement that it wasn't so much Hitler's qualities that lead to his rise to power, but the ideology he supported and the socioeconomic conditions of Germany after WWI, with the buckets being Hitler's appeal, Nazi ideology, and the Conditions of Germany?

Justin said...

And on #10, does it mean the social impact and OTHER results, or the social impact and SOCIAL results? It seems like the latter is sort of redundant.

For women's roles, should we discuss roles during the war? In class today you said that the role of women reverted back to pre-WWII very quickly after the war, so it doesn't seem like there was any social impact AFTER WWII (at least not enough for a bucket).

I'm having the same kind of problem with Internment in this question.

Mr. O said...

Justin-You are on the right track for #6. On #10, it is social effect and other results. Neither women nor internment is enough for a bucket by themselves, but they might fit in a bucket together.

Justin said...

the c/c question is interesting. I've been trying to bucket it along the lines of geopolitical results, social results, and economic results, but most of my info is going into the first one, while social and economic are just a list of statistics.

Would it be better to organize it as results for the Central Powers/Axis, results for the Triple Entente/Allies, and political tensions? if I did this, where whould things like the Armenian Genocide or the Holocaust go?

Beijing was previously known as Peking and is a very populated destination. It is a prime transportation hub and has a complex network of roads, railways and motorways. It is located at North China Plain. The Great Wall of China extends over the northern part of the conurbation. It boasts of a humid subtropical type of climate with humid summers and windy winters. The air pollution level has decreased over the passage of time, the main reason being the preparation for the Summer Olympics 2008. It is a major tourist junction and hence receives plenty of visitors all round the year who take frequent flights to Beijing. According to a recent suggestion, several forms of audio and visual arts (rhythmic singing and drumming on external objects, dancing, body and face painting) were developed very early in hominid evolution by the forces of natural selection in order to reach an altered state of consciousness.
