Welcome to IB History

I am thrilled to welcome you back from summer vacation as you start your two year voyage through I.B. history. Don't forget to finish up your summer reading. Also, you will probably need to get a g-mail account so that you can comment on the website. Once you get one, fill out the poll on the right hand side of the blog. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a note under this post. Finally, if there are any graduates who are wandering by, please feel free to give a few lines of advice.

Hey there all you fresh and eager minds that aren't yet husks! Welcome to IB. Its similar to boot camp in that the times that you'll remember and reminisce about are the ones that hurt the most... Do your homework, and ask questions. lots of questions. and not stupid ones like "do we have to do this" but fun ones like "what if Arnold's attack on Quebec had succeeded?". Questions like that will make your life more enjoyable and improve your understanding and thus your grade. GOOD LUCK!

Do your founder's project early and well.

...And do the reading assignments as early as possible. It makes the lectures more meaningful.

Bria Frame said...

Because I'll forget by first period, how long do you wait before posting questions for the test?

Well I appreciate the welcome! Sorry this is a little late commenting on this post but better late than never!(:

Mr. O said...

Hi Kylee,

How is the studying going? See I do check on this regularly.

Who was Sherman and when is the history and historiography packet due? I can't tell which "brown packet" is which in my planner

Mr. O said...

Emma,

Sherman was a Union Civil war General who burned Atlanta and marched to the sea destroying everything in sight. The goal was to break the South's will to resist. Neither brown packet is due until after next weekend so you have a little bit of time. I need to double check, but I believe the paragraphs are due on the 14th and the long historiography reading on the 15th. Have a great weekend.

are the great compromise and the missouri comprimise the same thing because i'm thinking they are but i'm not sure

Mr. O said...

Megan,

No, the great compromise has to do with the Constitution. It creates the House for high population states and the Senate for low population ones. The Missouri compromise splits the U.S. in half at the 36' 30' line. All states North would be free, South would be Slave.

Sweet blog Mr. O. I was looking over the reading sheet again, and some of the questions and people weren't mentioned in the book I got, "Dont Know Much About American History". Will those kinds of questions be on the test?

Ashlee O'Dell said...

Hey Mr. O,
About how much should we write for the short essay questions, and how in depth do we need to go?

Mr. O said...

Hello Ashley and Brianna,

If you read the book, you should be able to answer the two questions that I have chosen for your test. If you have a specific topic that you are concerned about, feel free to ask. Typically, I am looking for a solid paragraph with a number of terms/dates/ideas in it as evidence. You will have NO MORE than half a page of space available. Hope this helps.

I know you told us this on Friday, but I forgot... did you say that you asked every question on the test except the essays to 7th period?

Mr. O said...

Justin,

I don't want to say every question, just in case I skipped one. However, virtually every objective question was answered. Hey, here is a bonus for those checking the blog. I might spend a little time looking at U.S. actions towards the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Justin said...

"Explain the conflict between labor and the industrialists prior to 1900." Where can I find that in chapter 5 of "Don't Know Much About History"?

When discussing prohibition, is it safe to say that women were the most radical about it not only because of the economic and social effects of alcohol, but just to prove their political competence?

Megan Jones said...

i'm just wondering, but why did the u.s. even come up with the bay of pigs invasion?

Bria Frame said...

Megan: We came up with Bay of Pigs because we wanted to overthrow the Castro regime.

Annie Marshall said...

Is the slavery issue the event that led to the civil War?

Ashlee O'Dell said...

"Was Jackson a "great" president?" Are we supposed to answer this in our own opinion? I can't decide which way to go on this one.

Annie Marshall said...

Ashley - wasn't Jackson like really mean because of the Trail of Tears? I just did my opinion of him.. I don't know what good he did though..

Bria Frame said...

Yeah, Ash, it's an opinion question.

Mr. O'Donnell,
How long are you expecting the short answers to be? Like 2-3 sentences?
Thanks,
Colin

Ry Lynx said...

Ummah, hey Mr. O'Donnell

any chance you have the summer reading list doc? its not on the school cite anymore and i lost mine.... i need it to study..

Haile said...

Hey Mr. O,
Where can we find more information about Tocqueville? I'm probably just blind but I can't find it in my book.

Mr. O said...

Sorry guys, I was at my mother’s for dinner and couldn’t get online. Here we go with some answers.
Danielle-I think that is a fair analysis of the women’s rights question

Megan Jones-Bria is right. Castro was a commie.

Annie-slavery is the key issue but not the only issue. Lack of political will and different view on state’s rights are also key. Jackson felt that the Trail of Tears was the only answer because whites couldn’t be stopped in Georgia, but it is fair to view him as “mean.” You could also look at democratizing of America as a positive of Jackson. Bria is right that it is an opinion question, but make sure you have facts to back it up.

Colin-Prefer 4 to 5 sentences, but a good three sentence one can be effective.

Laura Johnson said...

Mr. O'Donnell,
This is a really broad question, but it would extremely helpful to get it clarified. Will specific dates be of significance to the essay questions? Years are alright, but are the month and dates important as well?
Thanks

Mr. O said...

Haile-Here is a decent site. http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Alexis_de_Tocqueville.aspx

Years will be rare, I won't ask you month and day on this one. This is an overview of U.S. history, there are simply too many. As for years, you might get, What key war occurred in the 1860s?

Ry Lynx-e-mail me and I will see what I can do. You get points for asking, but lose points for not noticing until Monday night. :-)

Mr. O!

thank you i will send the email.
and btw, i was going to ask for it friday after the nine hr car ride but when i got to my condo in kamloops realized i dont have Internet there anymore! lol I just got home.

Annie Marshall said...

Guess what i just found out, the Civil war was in the 1860's! Is that the only date we need to know?

Mr. O said...

Ryleigh-Don't worry about it, I just sent you an e-mail with a version of it. It is an old one from my home computer, but it has the key info.

Annie-1776 might be good, December 1941 is pretty important, 1787 would be awesome. Hmm, you may not want to get the history teacher going on this topic.

Mr. O said...

Looking at the sidebar on the blog, President McKinley was assassinated 109 years ago today. That isn't a date you will need to know, Annie.

Justin said...

Mr. O
will the test just be matching and essay questions? the packet says fill-in and multiple choice as well...

Mr. O said...

Justin,

Just matching and short essays. Three sets of 10 questions of matching and two short essays

Megan Jones said...

was tammany hall basically just about a group buying votes from people because i'm confused on what exactly it was

Justin said...

thanks
sorry i keep asking these one at a time, but i got another question.

"Explain the conflict between labor and the industrialists prior to 1900." what is this about? i cant find it in my book.

Annie Marshall said...

thanks:) I'll remember the other 3 dates though!

Mr. O said...

Megan Jones,

It was a political organization that would help immigrants in exchange for their votes. They then put in corrupt leaders who pass the $$$ back to Tammany. They use a portion to assist immigrants in exchange for their votes.

Bria Frame said...

Justin: It's in the part about the labor strikes. I don't remember the section heading, but it's where people were being killed.

Mr. O said...

Justin,

I don't have the book at home with me, so I can't reference exact pages. However, the following site is a quick read that can give you an overview.

Mr. O said...

Well, it is that time of night. I am signing off. Have a good night. If you need any more help, I'll be in my room around 7 am.

Kelsey said...

the poll won't let me put my vote in and i don't know why because i am signed in.

Bria Frame said...

Same for me...

Mr. O said...

Maybe it doesn't like your attitude. Did you ask nicely?
