Racial Issues

I found an article that I thought was interesting in light of our discussion with Dr. Loewen. Any thoughts?

Edit-Fine, let's do this the I.B. way. Five E.C. points for the most insightful comment. I'd offer food, but for many of you, points are more interesting. :-)

This is pretty rediculous (obviously that's not terribly inciteful).-

I think it just goes to show one side of the "American Tradition" of standing up for what you believe in. This man obviously feels that he did the right thing (based on his previous experiences) in making it a little more difficult for this couple to get hitched, even if it just means they have to go to another justice. This dude, as absurd and racist as his decision may be, is in a way doing his duty to represent (as much of a minority as it may be) a somewhat prevalent view in the United States.

Obviously we know that throughout history there have been conservatives that have slowed down the "progress" (i don't really know what other word to say there, maybe the "advancement of minority rights") of society's views. And in many cases these conservatives have managed to preserve views that people in America still hold dearly. Although I'm just as surprised as the next guy to see such a racist opinion this far past the civil rights era.

Denying anything based on race was cleared up years ago. And especially disturbing is this decision during a time when we have a black president. Clearly the social views of America are still divided, as they have always been. The only question is what kind of compromise (although personally i don't feel compromise is an option in this arena) will arise from this.

wow this is lengthy, but i'm bored. and what better things do IB kids do when they're bored than blog on camp o about their beliefs???? (that's just crazy talk!)

D,

For e.c. purposes, are you Dean,Drew,Dallas or just someone who like the letter D. I have a guess from the writing style, but I don't want another Natalie/Meredith situation if I am wrong. :-)

Mr O,

I am having troubles with the reading and I was wondering if I could come in after school or during lunch? I'll talk to you in class, but I just wanted to give you a heads up.

Thanks!

Okay, Mr.O this key board is absolutely digusting. I'm going to get Toby to clean it for you as soon as I'm done with this. First, we heard that you changed the Pearl Harbour packet and Kissinger reading due dates.

Kissinger being due Friday and Pearl Harbour due Monday.

We were wondering if we could have those due dates as well.

Gracias,
Fifth Period

First of all I have no interest in the extra credit.

I can see one 100grand reason that Fox News would publish an anomaly like this one. I am an avid Fox News enthusiast and when I'm watching Hannity and the guys on Fox 'n' Friends and call me crazy but it seems like there is a convoluted political agenda behind almost everything they say. That being said the most obvious political motivation behind publishing this story and the presentation behind it is to encourage against Obama. It kind of hints at the conclusion that even today with a black president there is still racism towards the kids of interracial marriages. How can Obama fix this health care mess if he can't even fix every race relations problem in this country regardless of how bizarre and rare they are. However, in all fairness to Foxnews, if there was a political motivation behind this publication it is covered up well specifically at the end of the article.

And Keith. Oh Keith Bardwell. He says he's not a racist, but offers a rich juxtaposition (thank you Mrs. Brown). He assures us that "I'm not a racist", but right after he ends the quote with the gem, "I just don't believe in mixing the races that way." I guess they don't have dictionary.com down in beautiful Hammond Louisiana, because if they did Keith may have read the definition of racism that racism is, "The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability." So Keith isn't it because of the race that the couple shouldn't be married? How is that not racist?

The main message I got from reading this is Obama is incompetent and its all his fault. Wait maybe I didn't but even if thats not what Fox published it for they sure wouldn't mind it happenin.

Brett,

Thanks for responding. I know you don't want the e.c., but you may want to take a look at the one I just posted.
