IA topics

Hope you are having a wonderful summer. If you have any questions or concerns about the IA's, please feel free to post here. I check the blog fairly regularly and will try to get back to you as soon as possible. Just in case you forget what your topic was, I have placed the entire list on docushare.

Hi Mr.O
I was just going to order some books on my IA topic "To what extent was the Marshall Plan an attempt to hurt the soviet union" and I was wondering if you could suggest any books to start my study with? Hope you're having a wonderful summer.

Merideth,

I apologize for taking a few days to get back to you. I have been on vacation in Colonial Williamsburg. As for your question, I would look up The Marshall Plan by Dulles. He was a significant player during the time period and could give you an insider's view. The other book that I have skimmed, but not fully read, is "The Most Noble Adventure: The Marshall Plan and How America Helped Rebuild Europe" by Greg Behrman. Finally, I would be curious about McCollough's take in "Truman" and Gaddis' take in "A New History of the Cold War." If you have any other questions, please let me know.

hi Mr.O
i was wondering if i could change my topic. i would like to do something like "to what extent were hitlers leadersip styles effective" or something like that. i dont know if thats to broad but if you could let me know or give me any sugestions on how to tweak it that would be great. thanks i hope your summer is going well

Mackenzie,

That would work, but I think you need to narrow it to a particular time period and perhaps examine an aspect of his leadership style. For example, to what extent was his decision to disperse power among multiple agencies lead to inefficiency. Otherwise, the topic switch is no problem at this point. Hope you are having a great summer.

Hi Mr. O,
I have been researching my IA topic and have found that it is not really what I want to do. I was curious whether I could change my topic to something around: To what extent was Easter Rising of 1916 responsible for the partition or Ireland?

Thank you and hope you are having an excellent summer!

Hi Mr.O,
I hope you are enjoying your summer.
After trying to research my IA topic I found that it wasn't really going in the direction that I had hoped. I was wondering if I could change my topic to "To what extent did the Camp David Accords change the Soviet Union's ability to influence Arab nations?" ?
Also I have a more detailed outline of my extended essay, and I was wondering if I emailed it to you, would you mind looking over it and giving me some more feedback?

Megan,

That sounds fine. If the answer is too obvious, we may need to tighten it up again, but the topic area sounds interesting.

Maxine,

That sounds fine. Feel free to e-mail me a draft of the extended essay, as well. Have a great rest of the summer.

Hey Mr. O,

You probably remember that I have that 'way out there' topic on geisha and it was hard to make this into a narrow enough IA topic. I have been doing some research, and I was wondering if you think it might be easier to discuss how a major event impacted them (like WWII?). That way, the topic would be narrower but I'd still be able to discuss and argue. I would definitely appreciate the input. I hope you're enjoying the last weeks of summer vacation.

Mariah,

That sounds like a good plan. What event were you thinking of using?

Mr. O-

I think World War II is a strong one at the moment, but I might come across something else. I'll let you know ASAP.

hope the summer is going well. It has gone by tooo fast and now its time for IA's, senior stuff, and Excused Absences! just kidding..but really!

i was researching for my Extended Essay and I remebered that i was concerned about it being to close to the IA topic. However, i dont remember what my IA topic was. ha do you know? :) thanks
Kassi

Kassie,

Your topic dealt with drought vs. man-made causes of the Dust Bowl. See you next week.

Kassi H said...

If my topic dealt with drought vs. man-made causes of the Dust Bowl, do you think me doing an EE topic on how the new deal effected rural areas that would be too close or do you think that would be ok??

Mr. O said...

Kassi,

That won't be a problem at all. Although they are close, it is clear that you are writing two distinct papers.

Mr. O,
For my topic, Che as the ideological leader of the Cuban Revolution, I've ordered several books on Che himself and some of his writings, speeches, etc. I was wondering if you had a suggestion of a book that deals with the Cuban Revolution as a whole, so that it's easier for me to place him within the context of the movement. Any other suggestions for books would be helpful as well!
Thanks,
McKenzie J.
