...how do the men maintain morale if they aren't entirely sure what they are fighting for?...

...what is really the determining factor in change of morale and predicament, because it seemed like the confederates had the edge but then they started losing hope...was Lee's health and attitude a factor?...timing?...Stuart's prolonged absence?

First of all, who is Natters? Secondly, what evidence do you have of them losing hope? Where are you seeing this? What do you mean about Lee's attitude? I think Longstreet's rant to Freemantle may sum up the reason that the South lost. What do you think?

ops sorry...It's Natalie.
hee hee I thought you would know who it was because I am always confused lol.

I guess more than losing hope there's foreshadowing of what the outcome is going to be. Partly in Longstreet's rant (is he basically saying that Lee moves swiftly and he is really good and getting all his men to follow, he just isn't sneaky enough with tactics?) but also with Lee's deteriorating health and how it would have been nice if stuart was actually there...it seems like its set up so I know where this is leading to. Not so much a hope thing...because Lee still is scheming and wishing for a good outcome....agg I wish I was there tommorrow...because I am always confused.

Natalie,

I think you are right about the foreshadowing. I find Longstreet's position to be just horrifying. Losing a battle would be difficult enough, but being wise enough to see what was coming and then being honor bound to carry out a doomed venture would be awful. In some ways, Pickett's ignorance would be a more pleasant state. I think faith may be Lee's undoing. He has such faith in the Army of Northern Virginia that he is convinced that they can overcome anything. Additionally, the men have such faith in Lee, that few are willing to challenge him.

So I am still confused on why the heck Lee keeps Stuart around I may just not be getting it I understand he used to be a good general but he's just causing problems again could you maybe explain it again?

he wasn't a general was he haha that's not what I meant I meant whatever he is maybe you should tell me that too.

Merideth,

Stuart was a General. He is lower than Lee and Longstreet, but he is still a General. I think the reason Lee doesn't court martial him is because he recognizes that the man has some talent. However, Stuart is undisciplined. As such, Lee hopes that by verbally reprimanding Stuart, it will make him a better soldier. Yes, Stuart messed up, but does court martialing him make him a better soldier. Lee chooses mercy over punishment.
